چکیده

We study a model of flocking in order to describe the transitions during the collective motion of organisms in three dimensions (e.g., birds). In this model the particles representing the organisms are self-propelled, i.e., they move with the same absolute velocity v0. In addition, the particles locally interact by choosing at each time step the average direction of motion of their neighbors and the effects of fluctuations are taken into account as well. We present the first results for large scale flocking in the presence of noise in three dimensions. We show that depending on the control parameters both disordered and long-range ordered phases can be observed. The corresponding phase diagram has a number of features which are qualitatively different from those typical for the analogous equilibrium models.

Meandering Motion of Self-propelled Particles

A meander is observed in collective motion of some kinds of organisms, for exmaple, a school of fishes and a flight of bats. It is interesting problem to explore why such a motion emerges. In order to investigate the dynamics of organisms, we adopt a two dimensional optimal velocity model, which has been proposed as a dynamical model for the pedestrian flow. Some features in the pedestrian flow...

Advanced Motion Correction Methods in PET

With the arrival of increasingly higher resolution PET systems, small amounts of motion can cause significant blurring in the images, compared to the intrinsic resolutions of the scanners. In this work, we have reviewed advanced correction methods for the three cases of (i) unwanted patient motion, as well as motions due to (ii) cardiac and (iii) respiratory cycles. For the first type of ...

Collective dynamics of soft active particles.

We present a model of soft active particles that leads to a rich array of collective behavior found also in dense biological swarms of bacteria and other unicellular organisms. Our model uses only local interactions, such as Vicsek-type nearest-neighbor alignment, short-range repulsion, and a local boundary term. Changing the relative strength of these interactions leads to migrating swarms, ro...

The role of collective motion in examples of coarsening and self-assembly.

The simplest prescription for building a patterned structure from its constituents is to add particles, one at a time, to an appropriate template. However, self-organizing molecular and colloidal systems in nature can evolve in much more hierarchical ways. Specifically, constituents (or clusters of constituents) may aggregate to form clusters (or clusters of clusters) that serve as building blo...

Phase transition in the scalar noise model of collective motion in three dimensions

Abstract. We consider disorder-order phase transitions in the three-dimensional version of the scalar noise model (SNM) of flocking. Our results are analogous to those found for the two-dimensional case [1] and [2]. For small velocity (v ≤ 0.1) a continuous, second-order phase transition is observable, with the diffusion of nearby particles being isotropic. By increasing the particle velocities...
